Religious Education
Curriculum Vision – Inspired by St Patrick’s Values
At St Patrick’s, our curriculum is rooted in the belief that every child is a unique and precious creation, made in the image and likeness of God. We seek to honour the dignity and freedom of each individual, nurturing their spiritual growth and guiding them on their personal journey of faith.
Through our teaching, Catholic life and Celebration of the Word, we strive to live out the Gospel and to bring to life our school’s mission statement. Our Religious Education curriculum aims to form young people who are religiously literate, spiritually reflective, and ethically aware. We encourage children to think theologically and to understand the call of faith in their everyday lives, appropriate to their age and capacity.
Programme of Study – Lighting the Path of Faith
To fulfil our mission, we follow the Diocese of Leeds’ approved schemes:
- ‘Lighting the Path’ in the Early Years Foundation Stage and Key Stage One
- ‘The Way, the Truth and the Life’ in Key Stage Two
These programmes help children explore life’s big questions—about purpose, dignity, and belonging—through the lens of Catholic teaching. Lessons are enriched by connections to the children’s own experiences and the wider human story, helping them to see God’s presence in the world around them and within themselves.
Liturgical Progression
We aim to give the children opportunity to deepen their knowledge and understanding as they grow through key events in the liturgical calendar of the Church. We follow progression planning to ensure the children take part in appropriate lessons and activities at the following times:
October - Mary, Blessed Mother of Jesus
November - Remembrance and Saints
December - Advent
January - Epiphany of the Lord
February - Candlemas / Presentation of the Lord
June - Sacred Heart
Learning About Other Faiths
At St Patrick’s, we have a widely diverse community of children and families from many faiths and backgrounds. We value and celebrate other religious traditions as part of our commitment to foster respect, understanding, and global awareness.
In KS1, the Lighting the Path curriculum teaches children about Judaism explicitly through the Dialogue and Encounter Branch. Across KS2, children engage in meaningful activities linked to significant dates and festivals from Jewish, Hindu, Sikh, and interfaith traditions. These include creative projects designed to spark conversation, curiosity, and a deeper appreciation of the beliefs and practices of others, all within the context of our Catholic ethos.
